Safe and Sound Protocol

Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)
Helping the Nervous System Hear Safety Again

Imagine your nervous system as a finely tuned listening system — always scanning the world for cues of safety or danger. When life becomes overwhelming, the system can start to misinterpret neutral sounds as stressful, much like a radio stuck between stations. The signal is fuzzy, the noise is sharp, and the body stays on alert even when nothing is wrong.

The Safe and Sound Protocol helps retune that internal “radio.” Through specially filtered music, SSP delivers clear cues of safety that help the nervous system soften, settle, and reconnect. As the signal becomes clearer, the body can shift out of chronic defense and into a more regulated, grounded state.
What is the Safe and Sound Protocol?
The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a listening‑based therapeutic intervention designed to support nervous‑system regulation, emotional resilience, and social engagement. Developed from the principles of Polyvagal Theory, SSP uses acoustically filtered music to stimulate the vagus nerve and help the body shift toward safety and connection.

The protocol is delivered through short listening sessions, typically 5–20 minutes at a time, depending on your system’s needs. Sessions are spaced out to allow the nervous system time to integrate the input. The music is listened to through over‑ear headphones using a secure app on your personal device.

SSP is gentle, non‑invasive, and supportive of a wide range of nervous‑system patterns. It is not about forcing change — it’s about offering the body the right cues so it can reorganize itself from the inside out.

My Role as Your SSP Facilitator
As a certified SSP provider, I guide you through the entire process with care, pacing, and attunement. My role includes:
  • Helping you understand how SSP works and what to expect
  • Assessing your system’s readiness and ideal pacing
  • Monitoring your responses and adjusting sessions as needed
  • Offering psycho‑education to help you make sense of your experience
  • Providing grounding tools and regulation strategies
  • Ensuring the process feels safe, supported, and collaborative

You are never navigating SSP alone. We move at the speed of your nervous system, not the speed of the protocol.

What People Commonly Notice
As the nervous system begins to receive clearer cues of safety, people often describe:
  • Feeling calmer and more grounded
  • Improved emotional regulation
  • Less reactivity and irritability
  • Greater capacity for connection
  • Reduced anxiety or shutdown patterns
  • Better focus and cognitive clarity
  • More ease in social situations
  • A sense of “coming back into themselves”

Changes may be subtle at first — a little more breath, a little more softness — and build gradually over time.

Who the Safe and Sound Protocol Is For
SSP can be supportive for people who:
  • Feel stuck in chronic stress, anxiety, or overwhelm
  • Experience sensory sensitivities or sound sensitivity
  • Have difficulty connecting or feeling safe with others
  • Feel easily overstimulated or shut down
  • Struggle with emotional regulation
  • Experience lingering effects of trauma or chronic activation
  • Want a gentle, bottom‑up approach to support their healing
SSP is appropriate for adults, teens, and children, and can be integrated with other therapeutic or wellness approaches.
How to Begin

Getting started is simple and supportive, the first step is to schedule a free 20 minute Readiness Consultation with Janet Crow to determine whether the Safe and Sound Protocol is a good fit for your needs and goals. You can schedule this free meeting online here: Book Readiness Consultation

This 20 minute virtual session gives us space to talk about your goals, your nervous‑system patterns, and what you’re hoping to shift. If you choose to move forward, we’ll create a personalized plan for pacing, session length, and support. SSP can be offered on its own or alongside the Rest & Restore Protocol for deeper, layered nervous‑system support.

If you choose to move forward, the full SSP package is $350, which includes:
  • One 60‑minute initial meeting to set up the protocol, discuss pacing, and prepare your system for the work
  • Five hours of the listening protocol, completed on your own at a comfortable pace.
  • Full year access to the SSP program.
  • Text and email support throughout the process for questions, guidance, and check‑ins
  • Two 30‑minute follow‑up meetings — one at the halfway point and one at the end of the program — to review progress, adjust pacing, and support integration.
This structure ensures you’re never navigating the process alone. You have steady guidance, compassionate support, and a clear plan from start to finish. The first step is to schedule your Readiness Consultation Appointment.
